I recently had a disastrous experience installing a Wordpress blog. I followed an example on the internet by a known Guru, (I’ll not mention the name here.)

His method was to upload the Wordpress zip file to the folder on his site and un-zip the WP directly into his site from the host end. This is a very fast way to do the install, and no doubt the reason why he recommends this procedure. Sounds like a cool fast way to do the install, UNTIL I DISCOVERED THE CONSEQUENCE OF THIS PROCEDURE!

I don’t know about you, but I put in a lot of time doing keyword research before selecting a URL name. My selected URL name ALWAYS have the main keyword in the URL for SEO reasons. Example my Keyword is xyz so I wand a domain URL www.xyz.com

OK so much for that. Now here is what happens when I un-zip the Wordpress Zip-folder at the host end. The Wordpress un-zipped files are not in the primary site folder, rather in a Subfolder off of the main domain name. Example: My domain is (www.xyz.com) the unzipped wordpress files are located in (www.xyz.com/wordpress/) after the un-zip process.

This in effect has destroyed my keyword researched URL link, as clicking on www.xyz.com will not bring up my blog. The only way around this was to install a Re-direct script in my htaccess file. Re-directing the www.xyz.com/wordpress/URL where the blog was installed to www.xyz.com where it needs to be.

NOT VERY NICE! My recommendation is to FTP the un-zipped Wordpress files up to your main URL folder, and then do the Wordpress install process. Happy Blogging    GB Garagnon

One Response to “How Not To Install Wordpress-101”

  • I was at a seminar once (can’t remember what it was about), and invited one of my employees to attend it with me. There were maybe 100 or so people in the room, and at the end the hosts went into the typical Q&A session. As I raised my hand to ask a question, my associate looked at me with deer-in-the-headlights eyes and asked, incredulously, ‘Are you really going to ask a question?!?’ To her it was simply inconceivable to do something like that. There is an entire block of readers that will NEVER consider leaving a comment, it’s just not part of their personality style.
